ICC issues arrest warrant for Sudanese President

- The International Criminal Court on Wednesday issued its first warrant of arrest against a sitting head of State. President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan is accused of directing attacks against the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa people of Darfur during a five-year counter insurgency campaign which started in 2003.

Sudanese envoy says his government does not recognize the ICC

- Ambassador Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem Mohamad of Sudan says his government does not recognize the ICC and is not bound by its decisions. He says the court "is a manifestation of Euro-American justice that destroyed Afghanistan, Iraq and Gaza" and does not deserve respect.

- A human rights activist from Darfur welcomes the decision of the ICC. Niemat Ahmadi of the Save Darfur Coalition says the people of Darfur have been impatiently waiting for this decision which they hope will put an end to their suffering. In her view, "without justice in Darfur peace will not come".
