There are some new emerging challenges that have to be coped with in agriculture. One is in the loss of preferential arrangements for the trading of products such as sugar and banana. Climate change and the frequency of natural disasters have the potential to literally wipe out the agricultural sector overnight.

Antigua and Barbuda said it appreciated the presentation on the three themes of particular importance to the sustainable development of small island developing states -namely- agriculture, climate change adaptation and the ensuing financial crisis. Counsellor at the Antigua and Barbuda Mission to the UN, Janil Greenaway, said the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action remains the most comprehensive framework for the sustainable development of SIDS.
