Civilians Continue to Suffer from the Conflict in Sri Lanka

While the conflict in Sri Lanka between the Government and the LTTE, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam - the Tamil Tigers -- intensifies, UNICEF says it is gravely concerned about the plight of children. In September, humanitarian agencies were asked to leave because their safety could no longer be guaranteed. Still, scores of children have been killed or injured and many are being forcibly recruited. UNICEF Spokesman in Sri Lanka James Elder elaborates.


Furniture Manufacturer IKEA Donates $48 Million to UNICEF

The Swedish company IKEA is expanding its support for children with a 48 million dollar donation to UNICEF programmes in India. UNICEF says the donation will go toward programmes in health, nutrition, water and sanitation in some of India's most deprived areas. The gift from IKEA, the world's largest furniture manufacturer, comes through its corporate philanthropy programme, IKEA Social Initiative.

Cyclone Nargis victims

Nine months after Cyclone Nargis slammed into the fertile Ayeyarwady Delta region in Myanmar killing upwards of 100,000 people, the area is beginning to come back to life. Schools and homes are being rebuilt, and the United Nations and its partners have developed a plan to bring about further recovery over the next three years. Dianne Penn filed this report.
