- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon this week started a five-nation visit of African countries with a stop in South Africa where he met with President Kgalema Motlante. They discussed a wide range of issues, including Zimbabwe, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and South Africa's role in peacekeeping operations.

- An ILO Commission of Inquiry on Zimbabwe has started its work. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, Director of the ILO's International Labour Standards Department, says the Commission is planning to start investigations of allegations of violations of conventions on the right to organize and collective bargaining.

World Festival of Black Arts takes place in Senegal in December
