Caribbean education experts meet on child friendly schools
Caribbean News Round-Up: a weekly 15-minute news magazine on developments at the United Nations concerning the Caribbean.
More than 50 education experts from across the Caribbean met in Jamaica this week to determine the best strategies for improving the quality of education of schools by making them child-friendly. The meeting was the first in a series of workshops around the world as part of the Global capacity Development Programme on Child-Friendly Schools, developed by UNICEF education section in New York.
Cuba says significant progress has been made in Timor Leste
Although much remains to be done, Cuba welcomes the significant progress made in the security situation of Timor Leste since the 2006 crisis. That's what the representative of Cuba Ambassador Abelardo Moreno Fernandez told the UN Security Council this week as the council discussed the Secretary-General's latest report on the UN Integrated Mission in Timor Leste.
Ambassador Moreno Fernandez said likewise, the country showed a great ability to recover after the state of shock which was caused by the attacks on February 11th last year.
Grenada is getting $3 million from the World Bank to increase youth employment
The World Bank Board of Directors approved a US$3 million zero-interest credit to increase youth employment in Grenada by providing private sector-driven training.
The OECS Skills for Inclusive Growth Project will improve the knowledge and skills of beneficiaries to help youth transition to the labor market. This is the second phase of a regional program that is open to other countries in the region. St. Lucia was the first country to join the program in April 2007. UN Radio's Dianne Penn reports.
St. Lucia celebrates 30 years of independence
St. Lucia is celebrating its 30th anniversary of independence next weekend. I spoke to Ambassador Donatus St. Aime and first asked him how are they involving St. Lucians in the Diaspora.
