Secretary-General visits three Asian nations

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in New Delhi, India on Thursday as part of his visit to Asia. On Wednesday he visited neighboring Pakistan and earlier made a surprise visit to Afghanistan. Mr. Ban told the sustainable development summit in New Delhi that the world must tackle the growing threat of climate change. He urged Pakistan to pursue its dialogue with India to resolve outstanding issues, such as Kashmir, and pledged the United Nations' strong support for development and the consolidation of peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Nepali staff member on what UNMIN has achieved
The UN Mission in Nepal, UNMIN, established in 2007 has fulfilled most of its mandate. It provided technical assistance during Nepal's election of a Constituent Assembly and monitored the ceasefire between Maoist insurgents and security forces to promote an atmosphere conducive to a free and fair election. Ratomir Petrovic spoke to the mission's senior media officer, Kosmos Biswokarma, who says UNMIN was successful in helping to end the 12-year-long conflict in Nepal.
Civilians still trapped by fighting in Sri Lanka's North
A hospital in northeast Sri Lanka has been repeatedly shelled this week as fighting continues between Sri Lankan government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the LTTE. With both sides using artillery, it is unclear who is responsible for the shelling. The hospital is in an area where as many as a quarter million civilians are trapped.
