IAEA says cancer is increasing in Africa

- On World Cancer Day the International Atomic Energy Agency says that the incidence of cancer has increased in Africa as a result of an ageing population, smoking and adoption of so-called Western lifestyles. IAEA's Daniel Malin says African countries have less capacity to fight the disease because they lack facilities.

Ban Ki-moon welcomes AU focus on developing infrastructure

- African leaders gather in Addis Ababa this week for their annual meeting focusing on infrastructure development. UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon stresses the importance of developing infrastructure such as roads, schools and  electricity grids, in order to create jobs and compete in global markets.

West African civil society institute laments situation in Zimbabwe

- The people of Zimbabwe continue to face a humanitarian crisis caused by economic difficulties in their country. Thelma Ekiyor of the West Africa Civil Society Institute says while there is an urgent need to help the country, the principle of the responsibility to protect does not yet apply to Zimbabwe.
