WHO says cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe requires drastic action

60,000 cases of cholera have already been reported in Zimbabwe, resulting in 3,100 casualties since August 2008. The World Health Organization (WHO) is concerned that without drastic action the epidemic will continue and spread to neighboring countries. The WHO says that this situation is different from others that the organization has experienced in regions, such as Angola and Goma. An embargo from Western nations has disrupted Zimbabwe's health services, making it very difficult to respond to the epidemic. Efforts have been further hampered by the economic and political instability caused by stalled talks between the opposition and Government. The situation does not look like it will improve any time soon with the cholera outbreak now also affecting people from rural areas, who are returning to their villages after visiting relatives in urban areas over Christmas and New Years.
