FAO fears increased food shortages in Gaza after the recent conflict
The recent Israeli military incursion into Gaza has badly damaged the territory's agriculture sector raising fears of increased food insecurity.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says "almost all of Gaza's 13,000 families who depend on farming, herding and fishing have suffered damage to their assets..... and many farms have been completely destroyed" during the recent conflict.
FAO says "destruction of the agricultural sector has worsened ongoing problems of food production caused by 18 months of border closure.."
And it points out that "owing to limited agricultural production, people in Gaza are facing an acute shortage of nutritious, locally-produced and affordable food."
FAO says it "is expecting a rise in food insecurity as an increasing number of Gaza families are relying on food aid or switching to cheaper and less nutritious food."
The UN agency says it will "soon resume its project activities in Gaza and has already started planning emergency agricultural rehabilitation interventions to assist the most vulnerable farming families."
