UN marks Holocaust victims remembrance day
The United Nations marked today the International day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
In his statement, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said we must continue to examine why the world failed to prevent the Holocaust and other atrocities since. He said that during the Holocaust nearly one third of the Jewish people and countless other minorities suffered atrocious acts of discrimination, deprivation, cruelty and murder.
But UN Under-Secretary-General for Public Information, Kiyo Akasaka, who opened the memorial ceremony, said the theme of this year's commemoration is hope:
"Hope that the many memorial ceremonies held around the world will encourage solidarity among people. Hope that the world will recognize and act to stem the warning signs of genocide."
Mr. Akasaka added that the study of the Holocaust would help impart lessons of human rights and our common humanity.
