Young Muslim Leaders Meet in Doha
Up to 300 young people representing different ideologies within Islam are meeting in Doha, Qatar, for the Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow Conference from January 16-19. They are academics, authors, and civil society and religious leaders, who are committed to their communities, and have a strong desire to bring about positive change. Prior to the conference, UN Radio's May Yaacoub interviewed some of the participants in New York about their expectations and hopes for the event.
Chinese Musician Dadawa Appointed UNDP Goodwill Ambassador
This January, Chinese musician Dadawa was named a National Goodwill Ambassador by the UN Development Programme in China. Dadawa will help the UN promote culture-based development for ethnic minorities in the country. The musician, whose given name is Zhu Zheqin was born in southern China but has been greatly influenced by ethnic cultures from across her homeland. In this interview with UN Radio's Xiao Fan, Dadawa tells why cross cultural connections are so meaningful to her.
UN and Partners Work to Rid Afghanistan of Landmines by 2013
Landmines and other unexploded remnants of war are the legacy of 30 years of conflict in Afghanistan-from Soviet occupation to civil war-and practically no region of the country is free of these devices. But local and international NGOs, together with the UN, are working to rid Afghanistan of landmines while educating the population about the dangers they pose. UN Radio's Andrew Byrd sat down with Cris Stephen, a programme officer with the United Nations Mine Action Service, to hear more about what's being done to make Afghanistan landmine free within the next five years.
