UN Security Council calls for a ceasefire in Gaza

The resolution expressing grave concern at the escalation of violence and the deterioration of the situation in Gaza, in particular the resulting heavy civilian casualties, stressed the urgency of, and called for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
The Council called for unimpeded provision and distribution throughout Gaza of humanitarian assistance, including of food, fuel and medical treatment.

The UN Climate conference in Poland last month, ended with agreement on an adaptation fund to help poor nations cope wit the consequences of climate change. The fund is expected to be around $300 million by the year 2012.
The Danish minister of the environment says the Poznan Climate Conference has "delivered what was expected from it and that the road to the Copenhagen summit has been cleared. Denmark will lead the Climate negotiation as the host country of the next Climate summit to be held in December where a successor treaty to the Kyoto protocol will be signed.
But it was not easy.
During a high-level session, the Group of 77 developing countries and China expressed disappointment that there was no clear statement from developed countries to unilaterally cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent.

Jamaica says sports play a significant role in development cooperation

The General Assembly has adopted by consensus, a resolution on "Sport as a means to promote education, health, development and peace", by which it encourages the use of sport as a vehicle to foster development and strengthen education; prevent disease; empower girls and women; and facilitate conflict prevention and peace-building.
It also invited States to provide voluntary contributions to the UN Office on Sport for Development and Peace and the Sport for Development and Peace International Working Group.
Counselor at the Jamaica mission to the United Nations Ms. Andrea Wilson said Jamaica is committed to further exploring and harnessing the possibilities of the contribution that sports can make as the country seeks to achieve the economic and social development of its people.
