UN officials and NGOs alike are calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. As Israel began a 3-hour pause on the 12th day of its Gaza offensive, officials and humanitarian workers on the ground in Gaza are calling it a good first step but not nearly enough. At the UN in New York, diplomats are working on a political solution to the conflict.

In the Provence Orientale of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, as many as 500 civilians have been killed in attacks by the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) since mid-December. A UN team visited the towns of Tadu and Faradje in the province, where civilians told them that 200 people had been killed in the more recent attacks. While the people in the towns are in need of food, and other essentials, the general insecurity in the region is making it difficult to reach them.

Two World Food Programme workers killed in Somalia

In Somalia, in the space of just 3 days, two World Food Programme workers have been killed in the course of their duties. WFP Spokesman Peter Smerdon explains what happened in the first attack, and how the attacks are making an already difficult situation even worse. More than 3 million people in Somalia - 40% of the population - are in need of aid.
