UNRWA suspends work in Gaza
The UN agency assisting Palestinian refugees - UNRWA has suspended its operations in Gaza after a driver was killed when a UN convoy was hit by Israeli tank shells.
UNRWA Spokesman Sami Mshasha says it was a decision that was not taken lightly. He says UNRWA had exhausted all avenues and available means to impress upon the Israelis the need for safety and security arrangements for the agency to render basic and needed humanitarian services:
"These guarantees had been basically not forthcoming. The two incidents today in which our staff and also contracted people working for UNRWA came under fire was not only the reason that prompted us to do that. There was a trend in the past few days that put our staff in our installations and even our beneficiaries in harms way."
The death toll from the Israeli bombardment rose to more than 760 after dozens more bodies were found in the rubble.
