Gaza health services on the point of collapse: WHO
The World Health Organization (WHO) says health services in Gaza are already depleted and fragile and are on the point of collapse.
The UN health agency is reporting 680 deaths including 218 women and children. The dead include 21 medical personnel. Thirty more were injured and 11 ambulances were hit.
WHO says the intensity of the aerial bombardment and ground hostilities is seriously constraining movement of patients, emergency medical services, referrals for care and the health personnel who are critical to the delivery of services.
WHO says of 56 public health centers in Gaza only 29 are functioning. It says on 6th January, 18 patients were evacuated through Raffah crossing for referral to hospitals in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Libya.
WHO says only about 25 per cent of hospital staff are reporting to work. No communicable diseases have been reported but the agency is in the process of establishing a surveillance system.
