Security Council fails to reach agreement on response to on-going Gaza conflict
The UN Security Council remains stalled on a statement regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Council members are considering two proposals - a draft presidential statement (PRST) proposed by France along with a draft resolution presented by Libya. US UN Permanent Representative Zalmay Khalilzad favors the French PRST and is hopeful others members will sign on:
"There was broad support for it. But as you know in order to have a PRST you need unanimity. And we're hoping that one of two members that were not favorable to the PRST would, upon reflection, take a different view. And we can move on that relatively soon."
The Council has failed to issue a statement on the Israeli military operation in Gaza since it began 13 days ago.
