South Ossetia and Abkhazia Want to Address Security Council - Russia Supports. . . U.S. Opposes Appearance
29/08/2008
Leaders from South Ossetia and Abkhazia have asked for visas to come to the U.S. to address the UN Security Council on the crisis in the region. Russia is backing the move, asking how can the Council be fair without hearing all sides of the story? U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative Alejandro Wolff says those two regions, and Russia, should not be rewarded for what he views as their illegal actions against Georgia. Russia's Ambassador Vitaly Churkin feels if Kosovo officials have been allowed to address the Council, the same courtesy should be given to the leaders of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Jerry Piasecki reports. (Long and short versions)
