Russian Recognition of Georgia Provinces - A Crime or A Responsibility - Ambassadors Disagree

At a special meeting of the Security Council called at the request of Georgia, that country's UN Ambassador Irakli Alasania accused Russia of violating international law and the UN Charter by recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin says Russia had no choice but to recognize the provinces' independence and now has a responsibility to protect the citizens of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
