Russia Not After Regime Change in Georgia - Russia's UN Ambassador
Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin says Russia is not seeking to oust Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili as a prerequisite for peace, as indicated by U.S. UN Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad on Sunday. The American Ambassador said that the Foreign Minister of Russia made the demand to U.S. Secretary of State Rice. Russia's Ambassador says his Foreign Minister simply relayed his country's feelings about the Georgian President, a leader who he says has violated all agreements. According to Ambassador Churkin, the fact that the call was taken out of context was an example of "Leninist diplomacy." Ambassador Khalilzad says Russia's continuing brutal assault in Georgia puts Moscow's real motivations in question.
