Security Council Fails to Agree on Statement Regarding Fighting in Georgia
08/08/2008
After meeting until the early hours of the morning, the UN Security Council couldn't come up with a Presidential Statement regarding the sharp escalation of fighting between Georgian forces and those of separatists in South Ossetia. Russia called the emergency meeting, blaming Georgia for attacking. Georgia blames Russia for supporting the separatists. Russia's UN Ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, says the Council members couldn't reach agreement because some members wouldn't OK a call for both sides to renounce the use of force.
