Diplomats working on Gaza ceasefire

International efforts are underway at UN headquarters in New York to arrange a ceasefire in Gaza.

Britain's Ambassador to the UN John Sawers says there's been a lot of intensive diplomacy since the fighting began and there's going to be a lot more intensive diplomacy over the next 48 hours here in New York:

"I think there is some convergence of views around a number of elements. We discussed this on Saturday night and obviously, our goal is an immediate ceasefire and that's what we all want to take forward."

French Foreign minister Bernard Kouchner arrives in New York Tuesday to chair a meeting of the UN Security Council.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to address the Council.
