Tourism key to economic recovery: UN WTO
The global economic downturn has slowed the movement of tourists across countries, but the UN World Tourism Organization says the tourism industry holds the key to economic recovery out of the recession.
The World Tourism Organization says tourism can deliver for the economy as a whole, noting that it is a catalytic industry and should be part of stimulus packages for infrastructure, jobs and investment.
The organization, in its 2nd Conference on Tourism Trends and Outlook for the Asia-Pacific region, confirmed that Asia and the Pacific was strongly feeling the impact of the global slowdown.
But it says tourism could be one of the key sectors contributing to overcome the current economic difficulties and could play a vital part in a long-term green economic deal.
