The Universal Declaration of Human Rights turns 60
17/12/2008
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in December 1948, was the first time the international community made a declaration of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
It has since become the most translated document in the world. It has been the basis of international human rights legislation and enforcement mechanisms, as well as an impetus for the human rights movement.
The programme looks at the history of its adoption, its significance and its enduring legacy through archival sound, interviews with experts and statements from the celebration of the 60th anniversary.
