The United States Endorses Secretary-General's Work
The United States government says it is not pushing for the resignation of the UN Secretary-General as suggested in the news media.
Its representative to the United Nations, Ambassador John Danforth, says that the United States' response to questions on its position on the investigations of alleged corruption in the United Nations has been misunderstood. Ambassador Danforth says the basic comment has been to let the investigation go forward, a view that has been misunderstood as not being supportive of the Secretary-General. Ambassador Danforth says that some have even suggested to him that the United States wants to force the resignation of the Secretary-General which is not the case.
"We have worked with him very well in the past. We anticipate working with him very well in the future for the time to come."
Ambassador Danforth says the Secretary-General is involved with important issues including the elections in Iraq and Palestine and the issue of Sudan.
