Security is the Number One Priority for UN Mission in Haiti

The problem of security in Haiti cannot be resolved by force, but by making a huge effort to isolate those using violence and disarming them.

According to the head of the UN mission in Haiti, Juan Gabriel Valdes, the mission should be able to demonstrate to the country's people its determination to disarm rogue groups and establish security. He says security is the number one priority, not only for Haitians, but also for the UN mission and those who are in the country to assist the people. Mr. Valdes says the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti is set to have more than 8,000 troops and police on the ground by the end of the year.
