Security Remains a Problem for Aid Workers in Darfur

The World Food Programme says that security remains a serious problem for humanitarian workers in the troubled region of Darfur in Sudan.

At least 50 thousand people have been killed and more than 1.5 million others have been driven away from their homes because of violence involving government forces and rebels.  WFP spokesperson Christiane Berthiaume says there are hundreds of thousands of people in need of relief assistance who cannot be reached because of insecurity.

"What happened to Save the Children is traumatic and is an example of the situation and the danger and the insecurity in the region that threaten the beneficiaries and also the humanitarian workers trying to help over there."

In the latest development concerning aid workers, the UK charity, Save the Children, has suspended its aid operations in South Darfur after two of its Sudanese staff were killed on Sunday when the vehicle they were traveling in came under fire.
