UN Officials Meet with Representatives of Affected Countries

In Geneva, United Nations officials met Tuesday with government representatives of Southeast Asian and east African countries, as well as donor and aid organizations to coordinate the UN's response to Sunday's devastating earthquake and tidal waves.

Here in New York, officials met with ambassadors from Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Maldives, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries.
And according to Sri Lanka's Ambassador Bernard Goonetilleke, despite its distance from the epicenter of the earthquake, Sri Lanka was the most affected country with the highest death toll so far:

"This morning, we were having information of something like 18-thousand but the numbers are climbing and the displaced persons will very well amount to a million or over a million persons. The fisheries industry as well as the tourist industry on which we base our economy is practically devastated as a result of the tidal wave."
