The United Nations Secretary-General's special envoy in Iraq, Ashraf Qazi has called for free, fair, inclusive and transparent elections in Iraq.

In a statement issued today, he said that the current political process should be inclusive and credible with every segment of Iraqi society fully empowered to participate in the December 15 elections. Mr. Qazi stressed the need for mutual respect among the different communities in Iraq to allow the electoral process to serve as a catalyst for reconciliation. He called on election and government officials to ensure the integrity of the vote and to refrain from imposing measures that will discourage voters.
