UN Completes its Peacekeeping Mission in Sierra Leone

As the year comes to an end, the United Nations is completing its peacekeeping mission in Sierra Leone.

The mission was established by the Security Council in 1999 to help implement the Lome Agreement, which ended the conflict in the country, and to disarm, demobilize and reintegrate former combatants into society. The Secretary-General's Special Representative for Sierra Leone, Ambassador Daudi Mwakawago says the mission has succeeded in creating security throughout the country. He points out, however, that the United Nations will continue to be engaged in Sierra Leone.

"So you will have a follow on mission essentially to deal with the governance issues, human rights and development issues and coordinate the various agencies and link up with the Government for greater speed in implementation by the government and people of Sierra Leone."

The UN mission has been donating its equipment to the Government of Sierra Leone.
