UNHCR Expresses Shock over Death of Sudanese Refugees in Egypt
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has expressed deep shock and sadness over a violence confrontation between Egyptian police and Sudanese refugees in Cairo.
At least ten of the refugees were killed and others wounded as the police removed them from the site into government barracks. The refugees had been protesting for three months against their living conditions in Egypt in a camp site in Cairo and demanding to be resettled in a third country. UNHCR spokeswoman Jennifer Pagonis.
"We know that the protesters who were removed from the site are currently in six government barracks in and around Cairo and the injured are in three hospitals. UNHCR staff are now visiting the injured and we have requested access to all of those in the government barracks."
Ms. Pagonis says that UNHCR will now try to ensure that all the refugees are not sent back to Sudan.
