Desertification affects millions throughout the world and is not just a regional problem, according to Conrod Hunte, Liaison Officer for the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

Speaking to UN Radio ahead of the observance of 2006 as the International Year of Deserts and Desertification, he said desertification is not only happening naturally, but is increasing as a result of human activities. Mr. Hunte says a number of events are planned for next year, including film festivals to raise awareness about the problem of desertification.

"There will be a number of workshops put on at the national level. There is one planned by Algeria and there is also another planned by the Israeli Government. In addition to that, posters and other things will be issued to remind people of the effects of desertification and things of that nature."
