UN Human Rights Office Says Situation has Not Improved in Sudan
A report issued by the United Nations Human Rights Office says the situation in Sudan has not improved, despite commitments made by the country's authorities.
It says the signing of an agreement, which ended the conflict in south Sudan last year, and legal reforms that followed gave the government the opportunity to end human rights abuses and impunity. Jose Diaz, the spokesman for the Human Rights Commissioner says these efforts to improve the situation on the ground have fallen short of what is expected.
"The report goes on to say that in Khartoum, for example, allegations of torture at the hands of the National Security, Military Intelligence and police officials continue to be reported. The report said that the absence of fair trial guarantees, as well as inhumane detention conditions are of serious concern as they occur throughout the Sudan."
The report calls on the Sudanese government to end the culture of impunity.
