The Middle East Quartet, which is made of the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States, has called on all parties to respect the results of the Palestinian legislative elections.

In a statementissued following Wednesday's elections, the Quartet congratulated the Palestinian people for holding free, fair and secure elections. It says the outcome of the Palestinian constitutional process must be allowed to unfold in an atmosphere of calm and security. The Quartet noted that the Palestinian people have voted for change. It reiterated its view that there is a fundamental contradiction between armed group and militia activities and the building of a democratic state.
