WFP's Flight Service Into Darfur Saved by Donations

The World Food Programme (WFP) says its Humanitarian Air Service in Sudan has received enough donations to continue operating for another month.

WFP's air link carries some 8,000 aid workers from 160 organizations to, from and within Darfur each month. It was set to run out of funds by the end of this month, but will now keep flying through the end of April.

The air service received donations totaling more than six million dollars from the European Commission, Ireland, the UN Common Humanitarian Fund, as well as $500,000 from Not On Our Watch -- a charity founded by George Clooney and other Hollywood actors.

WFP says the service is especially important at the moment given the deteriorating security situation in the region -- the roads are extremely dangerous, with three truck drivers from companies chartered by WFP having been killed this month.

The air service still needs $77 million to continue operating through the end of the year.
