Security Council Presidency for April Will Focus on UN and AU
31/03/2008
The presidency of the UN Security Council for April will be dedicated to the strengthening of the working relationship between the UN and the African Union (AU). So says South African Ambasador Dumisani Kumalo, who takes over the Security Council's top seat for a month on April 1st.
In an interview with UN Radio, Ambassador Kumalo says the Council is planning to have more consultations between the two organizations, the first being on April 16th:"And on the 17th, President Mbeki will be here accompanied by eight other heads of state--to discuss in a debate about how the UN can support the AU in the maintenance of international peace and security."
Ambassador Kumalo says one of his main issues of concern is the lack of resources for the African Union to resolve conflicts in Africa.
Reporting for UN Radio, this is Gerry Adams.
