Significant strides made in Haiti - UN report

Significant strides have been made in key areas in Haiti, but strong international involvement remains indispensable for continued progress.

That assessment comes in the latest report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti - MINUSTAH.

The report points to continued collaboration among the political leadership which has permitted the adoption of a legal framework for the judiciary.

It also notes that the security situation has improved considerably in the past year with the support of MINUSTAH's military and police.

And it adds that macroeconomic indicators continue to improve with the country experiencing economic growth at a level that has not been possible for decades.

But the report warns that the potential for regression remains apparent.

It says tensions between individual political actors and among branches of government have distracted the reform agenda.

In addition, the report notes that an increase in kidnappings and continued rumors of the recomposition of gangs have tended to undermine public confidence.

This is Donn Bobb reporting for United Nations Radio.
