UNMIL human rights report released

The UN Mission in Liberia, UNMIL, has released a report on the human rights situation in Liberia.

The report covers a six month period from May to October 2007. It focuses on economic, social, civil and political rights violations, sexual and gender based violence, detention and educational facilities. I caught up with the Spokesman for the mission, Ben Malor, who described some of the violations the report highlights:

"For example, when someone's right to food or a child's right to food is violated and the parents of the child then sell the child or attempt to traffick the child in order to buy food, that is very bad and we are highlighting that based on specific cases that have come up in the period."

The report recommends include allocation of resources for educational facilities in rural Liberia:

"Another recommendation is to legally prohibit violence against children, even looking into the issue of corporal punishment."
