-Economists Debate How to Accelerate Poverty Reduction

The United Nations General Assembly this week discusses ways to help Africa achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Participants on a panel on reducing poverty and hunger conclude that the economic growth in developing countries has not led to improvement in people's lives.

-Security Council to Focus on Stronger UN-African Union Relations

The UN Security Council in April is chaired by Ambassador Dumisani Kumalo from South Africa. In an interview with Derrick Mbatha, Ambassador Kumalo says he wants to use his Presidency to really focus on African issues instead of paying them "lip service".

-Political Solution Needed to Avert Catastrophe in Somalia: Holmes

John Holmes, UN Chief Humanitarian Coordinator, has been to Somalia twice. He has seen for himself the deteriorating crisis in the country, which for 17 years has not had a functioning government. Mr. Holmes is convinced that the situation will continue to deteriorate "unless something happens on the political and security fronts."
