Award-winning film raises awareness of obstetric fistula
10/04/2008
In 2003, the UN Population Fund, UNFPA, and partners launched a global campaign to end fistula. The objective was to make obstetric fistula as rare in developing countries as it is in the developed world. It has remained a 'hidden' condition, says the World Health Organization, because it affects some of the most marginalized members of the population--poor, young, often illiterate girls and women in remote regions of the world. Now an award-winning film and other awareness-raising campaigns are helping to educate people about the condition. Gerry Adams reports.
