Secretary-General condemns attack on UN officers in Darfur

A UN police team returning from a routine patrol in Darfur came under attack by gunmen on Wednesday.

The officers, who are serving with the UN Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), were robbed of personal belongings and their identification cards. One officer was repeatedly hit in the neck with an AK-47 rifle.

In a statement today, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was very troubled by the attack.

Marie Okabe is a spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General.

"The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms such attacks on UNAMID personnel who have been deployed to Darfur to contribute to peace and stability. He calls on both the Government of Sudan and the rebel movements to ensure that UNAMID is able to fully implement its mandate."

The attack occurred outside the Zam Zam camp for internally displaced persons near El Fasher. The injured officer is in stable condition and an investigation is underway.
