UN Secretary-General welcomes formation of coalition government in Kenya

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the formation of the coalition government in Kenya.

President Mwai Kibaki announced the composition of the 40-member cabinet where the posts are equally divided between Mr. Kibaki's party and the opposition, whose leader, Raila Odinga, will become the Prime Minister. The announcement follows the agreement reached in February, which was mediated by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. His successor, Ban Ki-moon, encourages both parties to urgently address the root causes of the crisis, which was sparked by the presidential elections in December and has claimed more than a thousand lives.
