The problem of sexual violence in DRC cannot be easily solved
The presence of UN peacekeepers has helped to reduce the incidence of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but this problem will not be resolved easily or quckly.
That is what Head of the UN Mission in the DRC Alan Doss told the Security Council on Tuesday."We have to recognize that this is the result of a collapse of the state, by the culture of impunity that is very evident in parts of the Congo, particularly the east. It's a problem linked to the presence of these armed groups, but we have to also recognize that it's a problem of some of the national security forces. It's something that concerns us greatly."
Mr. Doss said there has been progress in the way the government deals with the problem of rape. But he stresses there is a need to rebuild the criminal justice system that has been destroyed during the 18 years of conflict.
