Ban Ki-moon calls for release of election results in Zimbabwe

The UN Secretary-General intends to bring up elections in Zimbabwe at Wednesday's high-level Security Council meeting on Africa.

Speaking to journalists today, Ban Ki-moon said he will also discuss with the leaders coming to the UN what the international community can do to help Zimbabwe "resolve this issue to the satisfaction and expectations of the international community".

"We need really to see, first of all, very transparent and expeditious release of election results, so that Zimbabwean people will be able to enjoy democratic process and also they should be able to overcome this issue and serious humanitarian difficulties there."

Zimbabwe held presidential and parliamentary elections on 29 March, but the results have not yet been announced.
