17/04/2008
The new chief prosecutor for the UN Tribunal in the Hague is in Belgrade on his first official visit.
Serge Brammertz (photo) met with President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, as well as Serbian officials in charge of cooperation with the Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. In January, assuming the role of the prosecutor, Mr. Brammertz stressed that his priority would be the arrest of the remaining fugitives, namely two former Serb leaders Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic, wanted for war crimes in Bosnia. ,
His visit comes two weeks after the acquittal in the Hague of the former Kosovo Prime Minister and Kosovo Liberation Army commander Ramush Haradinaj.
The judges have dismissed 37 counts of war crimes allegedly committed during 1998-1999 on the grounds of insufficient evidence. Mr. Brammertz said he was not satisfied with the decision and might appeal it.
