Ban Ki-moon calls on Liberia to become an example to other countries
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday addressed the Liberian Parliament saying he has come to see first hand the remarkable strides the country has made in recovering from a devastating conflict.
Mr. Ban said the achievements range from economic recovery and poverty reduction to fighting corruption and impunity. At the same time he mentioned the challenges facing the country, including reforming the legal and judicial system, extending the rule of law, achieving reconciliation, as well as reconstruction and development. Mr. Ban noted that Liberia, like many countries in the world, faces rising food prices. He called on the parliamentarians to use Liberia's agricultural resources to reduce poverty and hunger.
"Today I challenge your country to demonstrate to the world you have the capability to not only meet many of your own needs, but also to export food to the region."
The Secretary-General assured the legislators of the UN's and his own personal commitment to peace, stability and prosperity in Liberia.
