Nepal announces preliminary election results

According to the UN Mission in Nepal, the national Election Commission has announced preliminary results of the vote for a constituent assembly held two weeks ago.

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has won the most seats under the proportion representation system, followed by the Nepali Congress and the United Marxist-Leninist party. The 4th and 5th largest share of seats went to two Terai-based parties. UN spokesperson Marie Okabe:

"The UN Mission in Nepal says that this does not yet constitute the "final results" as stipulated in the Interim Constitution, which will only be announced by the Electoral Commission once parties have finalized their proportional representatives."

The UN Mission in Nepal says the parties now have 7 days to deliver candidate lists. These lists will be checked by the Election Commission within 3 days to see if they meet gender and minority quotas. The constituent assembly to be formed after the elections is to decide the future political setup of Nepal.
