The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today presented an action plan of UN work in Chernobyl until 2016.
The plan was unveiled at a high-level meeting ahead of the 22nd anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident on 26 April 1986. The General-Assembly proclaimed the 2006-2016 the Decade of Recovery and Sustainable Development of areas in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine affected by Chernobyl. The aim of the Decade is to promote a "return to normal life" for the region. The plan, which is to be approved later this year, also focuses on restoring self-sufficiency of local communities, providing new economic opportunities, as well as accurate up-to-date information to counter widespread myths and misconceptions. (photo), who is a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, will visit UN community development projects in the region, funded by her charitable foundation.
