New plan for Chernobyl recovery presented at the UN

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today presented an action plan of UN work in Chernobyl until 2016.

The plan was unveiled at a high-level meeting ahead of the 22nd anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident on 26 April 1986. The General-Assembly proclaimed the 2006-2016 the Decade of Recovery and Sustainable Development of areas in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine affected by Chernobyl. The aim of the Decade is to promote a "return to normal life" for the region. The plan, which is to be approved later this year, also focuses on restoring self-sufficiency of local communities, providing new economic opportunities, as well as accurate up-to-date information to counter widespread myths and misconceptions. Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova (photo), who is a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, will visit UN community development projects in the region, funded by her charitable foundation.
