Marginalized groups must not be forgotten in food crisis - UN rights chief

The top UN human rights official has added her voice to those calling for the international community to respond to the global food crisis.

Underscoring that all voices must be heard in tackling the crisis - directly or through representative organizations - UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour stressed that solutions must include marginalized groups, not only the poorest but also those that are particularly vulnerable to discrimination based on gender, ethnicity or disability.

The High Commissioner also pointed out that food-related social unrest could potentially threaten other human rights, such as freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
