UN Security Council urges restraint in Lebanon

The UN Security Council has called for calm and restraint in Lebanon and for the re-opening of all roads.

The members of the Council expressed deep concern by the current clashes and unrest in Lebanon, including the blocking of major roads and Beirut international airport.

Council President Ambassador John Sawers of Britain says the members of the Security Council stress the need to uphold the security and sovereignty of Lebanon and express their support for the constitutional institutions of the country.

"The members of the Security Council firmly believe that the best way to diffuse tensions and avoid further instability is to resolve the current political crisis. The members of the Security Council stress the vital importance that all sides work together to resolve Lebanon's problems through peaceful dialogue."

The members of the Council urged all parties in Lebanon to urgently work together to elect a new president in accordance with the Arab League Plan.
