OCHA says up to 1.4 million still need emergency aid in Myanmar

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that close to one-and-a-half million people are still in need of emergency assistance in Myanmar.

According to OCHA, out of a total of more than two million people affected by the storm, only 500,000 have so far received international aid.

OCHA spokesperson, Elizabeth Byrs told reporters in Geneva that aid workers have not yet reached remote areas in the badly affected Irrawaddy Delta, and the United Nations has not received a full assessment of the area.

I would like to remind you that UN national staff in Myanmar, Red Cross staff are in the affected and not international staff so far. So we hope to see progress in the coming days. And with the enhanced cooperation between ASEAN countries, ASEAN Task Force and the UN, we hope to see a scaling up of the operation in the near future.

The United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes who is visiting Myanmar has urged the country's military rulers to find ways to cooperate more with the United Nations.
